East Tiger Mountain; New Tread 042312

We're talking finding, picking, moving, placing ... rocks.  Large rocks to fill a hole and add to the structure of the tread.  These rocks were rolled from the top of the mountain to the trail below and sometime it over shot the trail making it difficult to bring back up.  Luckily we had a grip hoist handy to help us out.  Each rock takes at least two people to roll a few feet or at least four people to move to the right location through the uneven terrain.  Sometimes they are too heavy that we just have to walk away.  Carrying it is out of the question.

Smaller rocks are used to finish a trail, large rocks at the bottom, medium rocks, then smaller rocks.  This creates better packing and less movement after it is places.  It is hard to tell in the following photo (I should have taken a photo before it was buried); there are sections of big rocks across the trail holding the smaller rocks in a box.  This kind of rock placement made the slope of the tread more gentle.

Where there is log work there is rock work.  Rocks are sturdy, last a long time, and don't compact easily so it is great to have as a base layer for deep holes that need to be filled.  The next set of photos show log work that will need a whole lot of rock work.  We'll save those areas for the future.
